Cleaning Guidance for Starband During Unscented Rubbing Alcohol Shortages

Orthomerica understands that many families and clinicians have experienced difficulty finding unscented rubbing alcohol during periods of increased demand, such as the COVID pandemic.

Outlined in the Starband® Wear and Care Instructions, as part of the Starband Labeling Information, only unscented rubbing alcohol should be used to clean the inside of the orthosis. Other cleaners such as soap, water, bleach, or perfume may cause skin irritation.

We recommend continuing to monitor the availability of unscented rubbing alcohol from local pharmacies, grocery stores, and/or trusted online retailers for product availability.

Temporary Alternative Cleaning Option

If unscented rubbing alcohol is temporarily unavailable, an unscented, hypoallergenic soap or shampoo may be used as an alternative.

Cleaning Instructions:

  1. Apply the soap or shampoo to a soft washcloth.
  2. Gently scrub the inside of the orthosis.
  3. Using a clean, damp washcloth, wipe thoroughly from top to bottom of the orthosis to remove all soap residue.
  4. Dry with a paper towel.
  5. Allow the orthosis to air dry completely before placing it back on the patient

Important: Do not submerge or soak the orthosis in water.

Ongoing Care Tips

  • Continue monitoring the patient’s skin daily for any signs of irritation.
  • During diaper changes or breaks, the orthosis may be wiped down with a damp paper towel and dried to help reduce sweat and moisture buildup.
  • Return to cleaning with unscented rubbing alcohol as soon as it becomes available.
